Our core product, Iris , is an AI-powered client-intake system that helps law firms engage prospective clients, collect relevant information, qualify inquiries, identify urgency, and deliver structured case summaries to attorneys. We are an early-stage company based in Leiden, Netherlands, working on a product where engineering decisions directly influence the quality, reliability, and scalability of the platform. We are looking for a Software Developer to join our remote team and help build the technology behind Iris. The Role As a Software Developer at Oculon Systems , you will contribute across the product's technical stack. You will work on user-facing interfaces, backend services, APIs, databases, AI-powered workflows, integrations, testing, deployment, and technical infrastructure. This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys understanding the full product rather than working on an isolated technical component. You will have the opportunity to take ownership of features from concept and architecture through implementation, testing, deployment, and improvement . What You Will DoProduct Development Build and maintain production features for the Iris platform. Translate product requirements into reliable technical solutions. Work closely with the product team to understand user and business requirements. Participate in technical architecture and implementation decisions. Improve existing functionality while maintaining system stability. Identify technical problems and propose practical solutions. Contribute to the evolution of the product architecture as the company grows. Frontend Development Build responsive and intuitive web interfaces. Develop reusable UI components and application features. Connect frontend experiences with backend services and APIs. Handle application state, validation, loading states, errors, and edge cases. Improve usability, performance, accessibility, and maintainability. Backend Development Develop scalable backend services and business logic. Design reliable application workflows and data processing systems. Build authentication, authorization, permissions, and application logic. Develop services that support client intake, case processing, notifications, integrations, and internal workflows. Improve performance, reliability, and maintainability as the platform scales. APIs & Integrations Design and maintain APIs used by internal and external services. Integrate third-party platforms and services into the Oculon ecosystem. Implement secure authentication and authorization mechanisms. Handle webhooks, retries, validation, failures, rate limits, and other integration concerns. Ensure integrations remain reliable and observable in production. AI & Intelligent Workflows You will contribute to the AI capabilities that make Iris different from traditional intake software. This may include: Integrating large language models into production workflows. Building conversational AI experiences. Developing structured information extraction and classification systems. Designing AI-powered summarization and qualification workflows. Working with structured outputs and function/tool calling. Managing conversation state and multi-step AI workflows. Improving prompt reliability and consistency. Evaluating AI outputs and identifying failure cases. Building safeguards around AI-generated information. Monitoring AI workflows and continuously improving their performance. You do not need to be an AI researcher. We are looking for an engineer who understands how to integrate AI reliably into real software products . Data & Databases Design and maintain application data models. Write and optimize database queries. Implement migrations and maintain database integrity. Consider performance, scalability, consistency, and security when working with data. Work with both persistent and temporary application data where appropriate. Testing & Quality Write appropriate automated tests for new functionality. Test APIs, business logic, integrations, and user-facing functionality. Identify and resolve bugs before and after production deployment. Participate in code reviews. Refactor technical debt when necessary. Help establish engineering practices that keep the product reliable as it grows. Security & Reliability Because Iris handles sensitive legal-intake information, security and responsible data handling are essential. You will contribute to: Secure application architecture. Authentication and authorization. Input validation and protection against common application vulnerabilities. Secure API design. Access controls and permissions. Secrets and credential management. Logging and monitoring. Dependency and infrastructure security. Data minimization and responsible handling of sensitive information. Deployment & Infrastructure Contribute to application deployment and release processes. Work with containerized development and production environments. Support CI/CD workflows. Monitor application health and production performance. Troubleshoot deployment and infrastructure issues. Help improve the reliability and scalability of the platform. Technology Environment Our stack evolves with the product, but you may work with technologies such as: Frontend: React, Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS Backend: Node.js, Python, FastAPI, Express, or similar frameworks Data: PostgreSQL, Redis, SQL, and modern ORM/database tooling Infrastructure: Docker, CI/CD, cloud platforms, GitHub Actions, and modern deployment infrastructure AI: LLM APIs, structured outputs, embeddings, retrieval systems, function calling, AI evaluation, and conversational workflows You are not expected to know every technology listed above . Strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to learn quickly are more important than matching every item in our stack. What We Are Looking ForRequired Strong software development fundamentals. Professional experience building web applications or production software. Strong knowledge of at least one modern programming language. Practical experience with frontend and/or backend development. Understanding of APIs, databases, authentication, and application architecture. Experience working with Git and collaborative development workflows. Understanding of testing, debugging, and code quality. Ability to read, understand, and improve existing code. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Good written and spoken English.
